Our Community’s Passport to Unity

The term “Newcomers” is applied to those individuals who have made the decision to move here from other regions of Canada or from countries throughout the world. One might suggest that this term is ironic considering our city’s history.  Sault Ste Marie, in fact, was built upon the immigration of newcomers from a vast ethnic and cultural background and from that diverse heritage has grown the community that forms our foundation today.  It is in celebration of our proud and diverse heritage that we wish to celebrate that this influx of people occurred and continues today.  It again brings promise of a future that is bountiful and varied.

Passport to Unity will be hosted by the Sault Community Information and Career Centre at White Pines

Secondary School and the Kiwanis Community Theatre on Saturday, March 29th, 2008 from 12noon to 5pm. This event is intended as an overall welcome and how-do-you-do mixer for our city’s residents, old through new, leaving communication to the most universal of languages, “Food, Music and Dance”.  Your entry passport will allow you to not only  sample a variety of foods prepared by esteemed local restaurants and cultural groups but also to select from a diverse selection of ethnic music and performance.  Exquisite works of art, hand crafted by local artists will be displayed and available for purchase. Performance, food, and art will capture and celebrate the cultural backgrounds of the different groups that make up our city.  This event will feature special activities that are guaranteed to engage and delight both young and old.

For the betterment of the community the cost of your single entry passport to this event is the donation of a canned good and a twoonie or pay-what-you-can, all of which will be donated to the Community Soup Kitchen.  As part of the theme of this event—unity—we will take the cans donated and use them to participate in the Soup Kitchen’s “canstruction®” event by creating a constructed image of our own.
